Join Kate as she shares her field notes and Tony’s photographs of their cavity nest box trail adventures! Share in their love and fascination of Azure Bluebirds, Elf Owls, Acorn Woodpeckers, Ash-throated and Dusky-capped Flycatchers and other cavity-nesters that have fledged their families for over 18 years at Birdland Ranch! Kate Scott is a certified veterinary technician, wildlife preservationist, and environmental educator working from her heart and spirit to help guide the community to live in right relationship with our wild neighbors. She is co-founder with her husband Tony Heath, of the nonprofit Madrean Archipelago Wildlife Center with a mission of compassionate coexistence between people and wildlife. Kate and Tony live lightly on Mother Earth with their four-leggeds;Tom, Frida, and Billie at Birdland Ranch Wildlife Conservation Area in the western Huachuca mountains.

Compassionate Co-existence with Wildlife

Compassionate coexistence means… "It’s not all about us.” Animals have a right to live in and around us, and we as the dominant species, have a responsibility to live as lightly on Mother Earth as possible and be respectful of our wildlife neighbors. Guidelines are from the heart, offering resources from noted animal experts and wildlife biologists, books and websites. Kate will also give practical, simple actions to help keep our companion animals safe in the Southern Arizona wildlife country. 

Directions to the Carr House: From Sierra Vista travel south on Highway 92 to Carr Canyon Rd. (at the Mesquite Tree Restaurant) Turn right (west). Drive about 2.1 miles up Carr Canyon Rd. Carr House is on the left through a gate.

Kate continues the creative journey of building your bird sanctuary, delving into the many aspects of nest-boxes and other bird domiciles, with photographs from the 20 year old Birdland Ranch Wildlife Conservation Area nest-box trail. Design, placement, monitoring, safeguarding and trouble shooting guidelines will be outlined so you will be better prepared to welcome your new neighbors! Participants will take home a nest-box with instructions for proper placement and monitoring. 

Note: This class can be taken as an individual class or as a two-part series with A Birds Eye View on the same day.

Success in attracting birds can be measured by our ability to consistently and conscientiously provide them with what they need! In this two part course Kate digs in, sharing insights on elements for attracting birds; food, water, cover, shelter and areas set aside to raise and nurture young. Detailed information will be offered on types of feeders (seed and other food types), feeding by season, birdbaths, and other natural elements to attract our beautiful wild birds.

Note: This class can be taken as an individual class or as a two-part series with Backyard Bird Sanctuary on the same day.

Arizonans for Wildlife Informational Work Session

MAWC is endorsing the Arizona for Wildlife campaign to end trophy hunting of our wild cats and will be facilitating an informational session with the Arizonans for Wildlife campaign staff for the community on December 13th at the Sierra Vista Library from 2:00 - 4:15 pm in the Mona Bishop conference room.
